Modest St Andrews spider

Argiope modesta

Description:

Complex yellow dorsal pattern.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.

Notes:

I have posted front and rear views of both male and female found on the same web. It breaks the rule of one bug per post, but I thought that this would be very useful. I see a lot of modesta posted, but none of them named correctly or only to genus level. The shape and patternation are variable but distinctive. FOBI show two species that look identical, modesta and mangal, I cannot tell them apart, except mangal females are tiny, 5mm length and males 2mm. I am open to discussion.

Thanks. Yes, females can be so temperamental :)

Great series, very informative. If I am not mistaken, the larger females of this species will eat the males if they approach her at the wrong time in her reproductive cycle.
