Sphinx Moth

Hyles gallii - Galium Sphinx

Description:

Sphinx caterpillars rear fore part of the body rest in a position which looks like the sphinx. Moths are in shades of brown, white and black. The head, thorax and abdomen are chest-nut brown lighter beneath. Very fast moving as they flit from flower to flower. Sometimes mistaken for a humming bird for they manner they move so quickly.

Habitat:

Found on tall phlox, lilac and fringe trees. Moths do not emerge in the same year as the caterpillars (August, September and October).

Notes:

When the tall phlox bloom in the Fall, the Spinx will appear like clockwork at dusk flitting around from flower to flower.
