Ectropis excursaria
This brown caterpillar was about 20 mm long. It was mostly brown with a pair of orange horns on the dorsal side of the rear end. there were paired dark spots on the side at both ends. The outer "skin" seemed to crease in folds along the sides. The caterpillar held the first two thoracic legs tucked close to the head, the last pair clasping the stem.
