Buteo regalis
This is the largest American hawk "and is often mistaken for an eagle due to its size, proportions, and behavior. Wings long and broad. Large head with a wide gape. Tail white or light gray. In light form, head mostly white, back and shoulders rufous, pale patch in ends of wings, underparts mostly white, legs rufous, making a dark V visible from below. "
This hawk is found in "open, arid grasslands, prairie and shrub steppe country; it is endemic to the interior parts of North America. It is used as a falconry bird in its native range."
This owl is under the care of Project Wildlife http://projectwildlife.org/ and was part of an educational program called Hawkwatch in the Ramona Grasslands by the Wildlife Research Institute http://www.wildlife-research.org/.

What a majestic bird!!
Awesome !! :D
Terrifing and awesome!
Hi Emily, what a wonderful project you're doing! I'd be honored if you'd use this image as a subject. Thank you so much for asking and for all your work with the foundation you're supporting! I'll send you an email as well :)
Hi Cindy, I was wondering if you would be willing to let me use the first photo for reference for a drawing I would like to start? As you may know I volunteer for the Birds of Prey Foundations and they have asked me to illustrate a Christmas card for them with either a Rough-legged hawk or a Ferruginous Hawk on the front. If you wouldn't mind would you email me at emilyjmarino@yahoo.com to discuss the possibility? No pressure either way, I just thought I'd ask! :) Thanks! Keep the beautiful photos coming!
It sure was! This bird was incredibly majestic, just like an Eagle. It's my new favorite hawk :) Thanks J.
Beautiful hawk, Cindy!
