Great Banded Grayling

Brintesia circe

Description:

Large (6 to 7 cm wingspan) butterfly, member of the family Nymphalidae, and the only representative of the genus Brintesia. It is mainly dark brown with white pattern above; and a cream one below.

Habitat:

This is an European species, usually found in light woodland and grasslands. Here, observed on a dry rocky-and-grassland escarpment, dominating a large Skradin valley. The rich Skradin valley is close to Krka National Park, park itself enclosing a river forming several waterfalls and lakes, and surrounded by a lush broad leaved forest. However, this escarpment is much more arid, and covered by a vegetation adapted to prolonged arid conditions.
