River Cooter

Pseudemys concinna

Description:

A wild medium sized turtle, about a foot in length. His name is/was Michaelangelo.

Habitat:

Freshwater pond (with copper sulfate and soda ash).

Notes:

I'm the Camp Director at a children's summer camp. We have a swimming hole that is regularly treated with copper sulfate and soda ash so that nothing lives in it and we can use it as a sandy bottom swimming pool for all practical purposes. For the past 8 years, one turtle has insisted on calling our swimming hole home despite all of the chemicals. We named him Michaelangelo after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. After all these years, we figured he must be mutated in some way. This past summer, we finally caught Michaelangelo sleeping on the shore, photographed him, and then released him in the nearby swamp where he will hopefully live a much healthier life.
