Honey Mushroom

Armillaria mellea

Description:

Medium-sized mushroom, wide oval rusty-brown to yellow dry cap, often with dark erect hairlike scales. Gills are attached, narrow, whitish to reddish. Stalk is fibrous, whitish to rusty-brown. Veil is partial, persistent, large and membranous.

Habitat:

At bases and near stumps of trees. Usually clustered.

Notes:

Also known as pidpenky in the Canadian prairies, due to the large presence of Ukrainian descendants.
