Hedgehog Fly or Tachinid Fly

Dejeana sp.

Description:

Another visit from one of these flies. This time it was much more co-operative. Even grooming while I was busy snapping away! It looks as if its mouth parts are permanently extended, not like house flies or hover flies that extend it as required.

I think it is because it is night time! Normally I only see fleeting glimpses at dusk, but tonight this one was attracted by the porch light and quite placid. I'm not complaining.

Stunning picture,Johan!
It is unusual they stay so quiet for you to have time to picture them.
