Shrew

Description:

Very long nosed rodent. Grey black ( in the dim morning light) Short tail. It produces pitched squeeks.

Habitat:

In a hole in a field next to a Sporthall, "close" to jungle and reservoir. Singapore

Notes:

Early morning. My dogs found it and I knew they did because I heard it squeek so loud. I went to look and it came out from its hide hole to walk over the field ?!?!?! The dogs sniffed and the rodent kind of "fainted". He/she very slowly fell onto its side. I really am pretty sure he wasn't dead. I will know later today. I could not relocate it as I was really busy keeping the dogs away. Had to take one quick picture though

I can't find that mission. The link you send does not work.
Would love to add it onto a Singapore mission.

I do not see what you could have done to prevent it Muckpuk. It became a part of the information here so it was not for nothing

Can you add to the spotting Biodiversity of Singapore (http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1909... Where exactly in Singapore was this, though? (I live there.)

Ok thanks Daniele. Busy day not so much time to research. I did just find a Rentokill !!!! site that mentions Bandicoots in Singapore?!?!?

Bandicoots are in an order (Peramelemorphia) endemic to Australia-New Guinea, so you can rule this one out. There's a south Asian bandicoot rat which is unrelated, and looks quite different. The ears and nose of Paucidentomys vermidax look different to me, and a quick search suggests it's not been documented outside of Sulawesi.

Thank you all for all your suggestions. I am leaning towards Shrew too, but it also looks like a Bandicoot ( lovely name) and some kind of longnosed rat found recently in Sulawesi called the Paucidentomys vermidax ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/a... ) Any idea how to find out? I am on my way home and will have a look if it has indeed died of a heartattack :-(

BTW the Asian house shrew is very loud and my dog shows them no mercy. I never considered that they were dying of heart attacks!

Hello. As has been pointed out, this is a shrew so not a rodent (despite the similarity in appearance). They were formerly described as insectivores (of the now abandoned order Insectivora which was changed to Soricomorpha or Eulipotypha depending on the article!). Here is my Asian house shrew http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/138... I'm just providing the images for your information to evaluate along with the other two species that have been mentionedsuggested.

Shrews are very prone to heart attack.

A shrew? There seems to be 2 species in Singapore: the House Shrew (Suncus murinus) - urban, and the Southeast Asian White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura fuliginosa).

Strange looking little fellow. Do you get Bandicoots in Singapore? Nice spotting anyway
