Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Lymantriinae family

Description:

Small, about 3/4" long, this furry caterpillar has long black feathery hair plumes on front and rear. The black hairs all over its body are in clumps, or tussocks, and there are two round white tussocks on each side of the rear and an elongated one near the head. Its head is relatively large and reddish brown. Pretty sure it's a tussock moth.

Habitat:

This was crawling on the bannister, overhung by rainforest trees in the foothills of the Maya Mts. in western Belize.

Notes:

This must be relatively uncommon -- a long search of images turned up nothing similar in color markings, so I couldn't find a genus. Lymantriinae is the family, though, I believe.
