East African Rainbow Agama

Agama agama lionotus

Description:

As we were all waiting for the paperwork to be done to allow us into the Serengeti national park this beautiful male Agama decided to come out and investigate what we were doing. It is only the males that have this beautiful red and blue colouring in the breeding season which intensifies if there are any females nearby. These lizards are territorial and will show their annoyance to other intruding males by nodding their heads vigourously and swinging their tails at their rivals.

Habitat:

Seen at the entrance to the Serengeti national park, Tanzania

Thanks so much Carol, I wish it looked more like spring here, our clocks go forward on Sunday for BST but we still have 6 inches of snow everywhere :(

I really love South America and I'm itching to see more of it but have to work a bit for now :( . Asa Wright's was amazing if you want a second opinion too! I can certainly recommend going. there is that much to see all at once you just don't know where to look next!! as for the photos some I wont be able to upload as they were before I had a digital camera and are only saved in photo albums :( but is is very rewarding you are right. Ric 3 thanks for the compliment and you are right it always pays to keep your eyes out for anything that moves.

Hahaha, me too! Tom and I have some similar spots from Dominica and I was also in Guyana. Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you. I did the same when I joined Noah. I've posted most of my spottings from my past trips, just not my most recent one. It's a lot of work, I know exactly what you're going through but it's fun and rewarding at the same time.

Great shot. It pays off to be vigilant when you are delayed on trips and out in the wild.

I also appear to be following Tom15 around Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago too and have an almost identical red mountain crab spotting :)

Love the colors! I've been through the exact same thing as you and spotted these lizards while we waited to enter the park. Small world!
