swamp milkweed leaf beetle

Labidomera clivicollis

Description:

The size and color of a large ladybird, although the spots are different.

Habitat:

Suburban garden with prairie plantings

Notes:

I'd first thought it was a ladybird, because of its coloring and because I'd first spotted it near a good-sized group of aphids. I'm glad Forest Dragon pointed out the difference.

That's interesting, Forest Dragon. It looked close to, but not quite like, some odd lady beetles in a field guide. Never heard of a leaf beetle. Thanks for the link.

Nice find! Even though this beetle looks similar to a lady beetle, it's actually a leaf beetle. They are one of my favorites!
