Archaeoprepona amphimachus amphiktion
I was amazed that one of the large butterflies stop at my garden table (ripe bananas) it was fine that it was a plain one...to my amazement when it flew away it had the most wonderful iridescent blue in the wings as bright as a morfo/morpho...It was very fast at leaving when I got a little too close...
It is found in rainforests and humid deciduous forests at altitudes between sea level and about 1,500 meters.
The Prepona Butterfly is the fastest butterfly in the forest. It can fly from 30-50 mph. Adults feed at sap runs and also attend carrion, dung and rotting fruit on the forest floor. The wingspan is 50-58 mm for ssp. amphiktion.
