Ricaniid Planthopper

Unidentified Ricaniinae

Description:

I have not been able to find an unequivocal match for this Planthopper. I don't think anyone would disagree that it is a member of the Family Ricaniidae. So, that part is easy enough. Then the Ricaniidae (according to Wikipedia) has only two subfamilies, Pharsalinae and Ricaniinae. The Pharsalinae has only three genera and the few pictures of any of them (that I have been able to find) look nothing like the Planthopper in my photo. On the other hand, the Ricaniinae has sixty genera and the pictures that I have seen (of any of the species from these genera) bare, at least, some general resemblance to my photo. So, at present, the closest I can get to an ID, is the Subfamily Ricaniinae. Not very scientific, I agree, but it's always a bit of a slog when you just don't know and start from scratch :-)

Habitat:

Spotted in an uncultivated part of the farm where the weeds have been allowed to take over. There is some shade provided by trees and the wreckage of a building, destroyed by a typhoon, a few years ago.
