American Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Description:

Very large predatory bird with very distinctive field marks. Adults have a white head with a yellow beak, brown body, white tail and yellow legs. Immature birds have a brown body. Often seen soaring above as these birds were doing, the bald eagle field marks make easy to recognize.

Habitat:

Foung near woodlands and forest that adjoin bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

Notes:

These birds are being sighted in central Illinois more frequently. This sighting took place over a large lake about 50 miles east of the Illinois River at Peoria.
