Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Very large predatory bird with very distinctive field marks. Adults have a white head with a yellow beak, brown body, white tail and yellow legs. Immature birds have a brown body. Often seen soaring above as these birds were doing, the bald eagle field marks make easy to recognize.
Foung near woodlands and forest that adjoin bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
These birds are being sighted in central Illinois more frequently. This sighting took place over a large lake about 50 miles east of the Illinois River at Peoria.
