Camponotus consobrinus
Slightly smaller than a bull ant, this ant had a large black abdomen with short hairs. The anterior part of the abdomen and the petiole were a beautiful caramel colour. A slightly elongated humped thorax was orange with red and black colouring. the head and eyes were black. Legs were a pale yellow.
Spotted in a school garden at night.
This ant had sizable mandibles. Unsure if this is a queen.
sugar ants are omnivores, feeding on nectar from plants and aphids and, meat from dead animals.
A very attractive ant - my first sighting of this species !
