Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Description:

I had a hard time at first distinguishing this from the very similar Downy Woodpecker. The key was noticing the white outer tail feathers. Downy Woodpeckers will have white outer tail feathers with black bars whereas the Hairy Woodpecker's are just white.

Habitat:

Protected area with deciduous forest and two large ponds. Cleveland Metroparks System, North Chagrin Reservation, Mayfield, Ohio Cuyahoga County USA
