White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

Description:

These birds have proven difficult for me to capture on film even at feeders as they don't stay very long. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside.

Habitat:

Protected area with deciduous forest and two large ponds. Cleveland Metroparks System, North Chagrin Reservation, Mayfield, Ohio Cuyahoga County USA. Feeding area set up by the park.
