Lichen Moth

Lycomorpha pholus

Description:

Yellowish-orange coloration is located at the base of the bluish-black forewings and hindwings. The body of this moth is black.

Habitat:

On guajillo in wildlife habitat yard.

Notes:

In the central and south portions of the US the "yellow" on the wings is usually displayed as red, like this guy. The wings become more yellow as you move east. The red color pattern is thought to be mimicry of poisonous Lycid beetles. The name "Lichen Moth" comes from the species caterpillar, which resembles lichen and feeds on it.
