Common pheasant (Male)

phasianus colchicus

Description:

depending on sub species some pheasants have a much broader white ring around their neck but this one is very thin. Originating from Asia the common or ring necked pheasants seem to ahve naturalised in this country and are mostly found in woodlands and farm lands where they are bred as game birds. The male is much more colourful than the female.

Habitat:

Seen at Potteric Carr nature reserve owned by the Yorkshire wildlife trust.

Notes:

can fly but usually chooses not to, roosts in trees at night so short flights at dusk and dawn.
