Female Hairy Woodpeckers are similar to the males but lack the red on the back of the head and may lack most of the white spots on the black wings. The back is white and has white tail. Black crown and black eye mask. White facial stripe above and below the eye. White underparts. Long bill almost the length of the width of the head.
