Description:

Diving & Sea duck
These bird are rare in California. Yet this one has returned many years. This bird is in a non-breeding color. Mostly slate blue in color with large white patch in front of eyes that trails up over the head. White patch and vertical slash on side of head. White necklace and large slash on side of chest. Large rusty patch on flanks and white markings on wings. Sometimes called the Totem duck because of the color and markings looks like it came from a Totem Pole.

Habitat:

Listed as being found in fast moving water and rough waters. This one was found in the calm waters of the bay.

Notes:

Spotted swimming with a female Surf Scoter.
