Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

The Great Blue Heron is the largest North American heron. It is a wading bird, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores, England and the Netherlands.

Habitat:

Great Blue Heron spotted in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Naval Live Oaks area.

Notes:

There seemed to have been a fire in this area recently, so the blue heron was very easy to spot amongst all the brown and black in the background of this salt mash area.
