Lesser Flamingo (Juvenile)

Phoeniconaias minor

Description:

Flamingos have a distinctive downward curved bill which filters food of various sizes using complex rows of hair-like structures called lamellae. The Lesser Flamingo has such a dense filter that it can sift out single-celled plants less than two-hundredths of an inch in diameter.

Habitat:

The Little Rann Of Kutch is a unique habitat comprising saline desert plains, rocky and thorn scrub, arid grasslands, plateaus to wetlands and marshes

Notes:

The Little Rann of Kutch is one of the largest breeding ground for Lesser Flamingos in India. This saline desert habitat is currently fighting a man-made issue due to the dumping of excess freshwater diverted from one 'Sardar Sarovar Dam'. Crores of litres of freshwater is thrown out here year on year, which eventually will affect the salinity of this habitat and become challenging for species like these Lesser Flamingos who depend on saline water for food.
