Collared Dove

Streptopelia decaocto

Description:

Adult is a medium sized dove with grey to pinkish grey plumage, a little darker above,blue-grey under wing patch. A black half-collar edged with white on its neck. Red legs and dark bill. Juvenile does not have fully formed collar marking.

Habitat:

Evergreen trees bordering a marshy field of low shrubs, cattails and grasses.

Notes:

Doves attracted my attention when I heard dove calling, cooing near another nesting area I visit. I kept visiting the area and listening, looking for a dove. Finally I made a few sightings of the doves hidden deep in the evergreen trees,in thick mingling's of green and dried branches about 15-20ft above the ground. After a month of patiently waiting and watching I spotted this dove high on top the evergreen trees. It appears to be a juvenile. The Doves are nesting near an active Osprey nest and Canada Geese resting sight. The tree line is shared by assorted small birds. The doves call is beautiful to hear.
