Southern Toad

Anaxyrus terrestris

Description:

Abundant in many areas of the South, the southern toad is characterized by knob-like extensions on the cranial crests at the rear of the head. Southern toads have pale bellies and warty, brown spotted skin. Adult southern toads usually keep hidden away in the daytime, then emerge at dusk for foraging or mating. Juveniles are commonly encountered at almost any hour. Southern toads can be heard through the warmer months, if the weather is favorable. Like most toads, they breed in shallow pools of water.
