Baird's Pocket Gopher

Geomys breviceps

Description:

A burrowing rodent that is brown all over, has long claws, and reduced eyes and ears.

Habitat:

Lives underground in sandy soils where it can burrow. This guy was caught in a pit fall trap I am using for my Master's research. It is a lightly oak forested area.

Notes:

After these pictures, I picked him up with gloves, measured him, then released him and he ran off very quickly. He was very grumpy and bit me a lot, luckily his teeth weren't that big to go through the gloves!
