American Three-toed Woodpecker

Picoides dorsalis

Description:

black and white woodpecker with barring down the center of the back and on the flanks. Male has yellow crown with blurred edges.

Habitat:

Had 3 separate sightings of this woodpecker which is normally quite rare in this area, possibly because of bug infestation in the forests of E C Manning Park. The adult male and juvenile in this spotting were seen in the woods surrounding Campsite #35 at the Lightning Lakes campground.

Notes:

This is an amazing birding area. I need to go here more often!!

Your very welcome! I am very excited about that

Thanks Joshua! I went back to the same area this summer but didn't find any more. So hard to find!! Nice to see your mission encompasses North America now!

The adult male was actively feeding and teaching the juvenile to forage on the trunks of the trees and a fallen log near the campsite. So cool to watch!
