Helmeted Guineafowl

Numida meleagris

Description:

The Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris) is the best known of the guineafowl bird family, Numididae, and the only member of the genus Numida. It breeds in Africa, mainly south of the Sahara, and has been widely introduced into the West Indies, Brazil, Australia and southern France.

Habitat:

This trio was spotted by the freshwater lake at the University of Queensland Campus in Brisbane.

Notes:

I really like these birds. There are only the three of them but I see them each time I visit the lake. Like little fat ladies, they waddle along quite happily visiting whoever may be around, usually those sitting on the lawns or park benches. I do worry, however, that some people may be cruel to them. One has a limp, and I suspect it was kicked.

That's exactly how the move about, all in single file. I like this little group - harmless and happy.
