Aegotheles cristatus
The Australian Owlet-nightjar is the smallest of the nocturnal birds found in Australia, as well as the most common and widespread. However, this is the first time my husband and I had ever seen one... in fact, we did not know they existed! Just amazing to see one out in the day like this. It is also, without a doubt, the cutest bird I've ever seen. It was only really small - I think the head and body (without tail) wouldn't have been more than about 15cm. The third photo in this series was taken by my husband Nathan (NathBig).

Thank you, Steve. I think this is my favourite spotting of 2013.
I love these little guys. We rescued one a few years ago, and I had no idea what it was. They are apparently "common" but I have only ever seen one. Great shot :-)
