Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Description:

Winter plumage, bright red eyes, white cheek patches which extend almost around the back of the neck, but leave one thin strip of black down the back of the neck, yellow beak, smaller than Red-necked or Western Grebe which have similar winter plumage.

Habitat:

Southern shoreline of Okanagan Lake in the dry interior valley of British Columbia.

Notes:

Love how the reflection of the surrounding autumn leaves has coloured the water of the lake yellow, which was really grey/blue.
