Flower wasp

Scoliidae

Description:

This large and strong looking wasp. Approximately 30mm face-to-tail, setae under thorax reminded me of robber flies.

Habitat:

Under strong night lights at a local used car yard. Surrounded by eucalyptus forest. Very warm conditions with a strong north-westerly during the day.

Great shot Professor Mark
It seems to me that Scoliidae are more hairy than Tiphiidae.
I saw one similar;

I think these are males and the females are wingless

Hi Mark
I figure this is some type of Tiphiidae
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiphiidae
Not a cicada killer.
