For the past week i've seen one of these possums hanging around every night, however last night i spotted a female with her young. Body length 500 mm; tail length 400 mm; weight 4 kg. Cat-sized; usually dark slate-grey, but may be pure black; short round ears; tail not bushy near tip.

Habitat:

Two of several possums that live in my acre yard, which is planted with native rainforest trees. Spotted in lilly pilly and palm trees near swimming pool close to house.

I know mark! Very lucky! What's odd is that there appears to be a boom in their numbers suddenly around here. In the past I would have been lucky to see one every few months & just starting last week i've seen at least one every night, most nights 3 or 4, all short-eared possums and at the same time can hear even more not far off. I'd be very interested to know the reason behind this.
