American Goldfinch

Carduelis tristis

Description:

The breeding male (shown) of this small bird is bright yellow with a black cap and wings, which have white bars. They also have a black cap on their heads and orange bills. The males in winter and females tend towards an olive green/yellow.

Habitat:

Grasslands and savannas.

Notes:

The American Goldfinch, as do many birds, have a breeding season that coincides with the greatest amount of available food. Since these birds eat primarily seeds, their young are not hatched until July or August in Minnesota when seeds are the most common.
