Tawny Frogmouth

Podargus strigoides

Description:

Also known as the Mopoke, because the call of the Boobook Owl is often mistaken for the call of the Tawny Frogmouth. Tawnies have a soft call. They are also known by many other names such as Freckled Frogmouth and night hawk among them. they roost in trees or on dead timber near the ground and blend very well with their surroundings often impersonating the branch they are on. large golden eyes, grey/brown and flecked feathers and a large wide beak overtopped with long facial 'whiskers' are the trademark look for Tawnies.

Habitat:

Found throughout most of Australia and Tasmania, prefering woodland and open wooded areas.

Notes:

Although found throughout Australia the colouring, size and calls can vary, due to genetic factors, environment, location restrictions and other changes and adaptations the birds have had to make over time. More closely related to nightjars than owls.
