Brown exoskeleton with wet cicada emerging from it. Delicate-looking transparent wings interlaced with green with the look of leaded glass. Yellowish-tan body with pink and green markings.
Our front porch. Our yard is heavily wooded with mature trees in an older suburban neighborhood.
I've previously posted a picture of one of these, but have never before seen one in the act of moulting. We watched as it pulled itself clear of its exoskeleton, went to walk our dog, and when we came back the cicada was drying its wings, which is what I've photographed in the second picture.

Agreed. We watched for quite a while.
I'll never cease to be amazed by molting cicadas. It's always so neat to watch an insect molting, but cicadas just take the cake.
