Sanderling

Calidris alba

Description:

Sanderlings are small shorebirds. They are noted for racing up and down the beach as the waves move in and out. This makes them humorous to watch but more difficult to catch in focus.

Habitat:

Extremely widespread, favoring coastal regions of oceans, seas, and lakes. Breeding season takes them to the arctic tundra. Spotted along the FL gulf coast.

Notes:

The sanderling is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Regula... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sande...
