Aeshna canadensis
This is one of Minnesota's larger dragonflies at nearly 3" in length and wingspan. The front thoracic stripe (not shown in this view) is deeply notched at a ninety degree angle.
Often found along lakeshores where males actively patrol sections of shoreline looking for mates and warding off other males. They often perch vertically on tree trunks as this one is doing.
