Winter adult and juvenile variably marked with black, brown and white upperparts; shows clear demarcation between dark breast and white underparts. In breeding plumage, has orange-brown feathers on back, and black and white head. Legs reddish orange. Bill stubby and triangular.
Breeds mainly on stony or rocks coasts and in treeless archipelagos. Winters in a variety of coastal habitats.
Sometimes called 'ruddy turnstone).
