White-tailed Deer

Description:

The state mammal of Nebraska, the White-tailed deer is a herbivorous hoofed mammal (ungulate) that is reddish-brown with a white underside. The white-tailed deer get its name from the long white hair on the underside of the tail and rump. During flight the hair is flared, and the tail is held aloft like a signaling flag. The female in the picture would weigh about 150# while the young one (notice the tell-tale spots of a juvenile) probably would weigh under 100#.

Habitat:

These were photographed early in the morning as they made their way through a residential area (320 masl) on their way back to the Missouri River bottom.

Notes:

Always a treat to kick up deer on my 5K morning walk around our neighborhood. I was thankful for a camera with a good zoom (See picture #4).
