Band-winged Grasshopper

Oedipodinae

Description:

Male band-winged grasshoppers, and sometimes females, produce sound in flight (crepitation). The snapping, crackling, or buzzing sound is made by rubbing the under surface of the forewings against the veins of the hind wings. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/ghopper/band.p...

Habitat:

UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens Old Rose Garden, Berkeley, CA.

Notes:

I hear this grasshopper before I spotted it. It was camouflaged so well on the gravel walkway.

It's hard to tell which one this is. I believe it's Subfamily Oedipodinae (Band-winged Grasshopper) but that's as far as I can say.
