Red-Tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

While driving to work one morning, I had to pull over and take a few photo of a beautiful red-tailded hawk trying to keep herself warm one chilly Colorado day!

Thanks Frank. They are one of my favorites too! They are so common here in Colorado, I see them everywhere. However, not all of them are as patient as this gal!

Great photograph! This looks similar to the subspecies I see in my area. Love this species; one of my favorite Accipiterids

Always see them up in the air or perched high up! Never seen one so close.
Beautiful!

I volunteer with the Birds of Prey Foundation here in Broomfield, CO. Apparently, Red-tails are "checkerboard": migrators. So they will go, East to West as well as South to migrate. I am still learning, but there are SO MANY variations of red tails, it's just incredible!

...and thank you for the kind words about my artwork! I really need to update my website!

This is so interesting -- red-tails have a lot of geographic variation. This is a "southwestern" (according to Sibley) which really is much lighter than the "western" red-tails we have in California.
