I think it was hair they were after, when I do a close up on one of the photos one of them has hair in the mouth, but then again it would almost be impossible not, because the horse is loosing its hair...

Very cool spotting Jeannette!
Were you able to tell if they were removing parasites or pulling out hair for their nests? I've heard they sometimes do that with deer.
