This waterfowl has a gray body with a darker head and neck region. The tip of the short, white, thick bill has a dark ring around it. Females weigh between 1 and 1 1/2 pounds, while males can approach 2 pounds.
The American Coot is found in wetlands and open water bodies.
Coots are frequently found in large social groups called "rafts".
