Zebra swallowtail

Protographium marcellus

Description:

It was difficult to keep up with this fast flyer but I'm glad I did. This is my first spotting of the zebra swallowtail. Its black and white strips and or markings are striking, to say the least. It has long narrow tails on the hind wings that are very noticeable in flight. The underside is similar with some added red spots -- see (pic 3). There is also a small patch of red on the top side of the hind wing.

Habitat:

Spotted visiting wildflowers at Mount Magazine State Park.

Notes:

Ranges in the southeastern United States. From Bugguide: Larvae feed on pawpaw. Adults take nectar and (males only?) take fluids from damp sand.
