Omnivorous Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Acyphas semiochrea

Description:

This attractive caterpillar was about 25 mm long. Significant features included a pencil thin tuft of forward pointing black hair on either side of the head. Broad pale patches seen along the mid line on the dorsal side and a red " nodule"was seen along the midline on two abdominal segments nearer the rear end.

Habitat:

Spotted on Back Wattle ( Acacia mearnsii) in a nature reserve.

Notes:

Larvae are said to also feed on several other species of plants. Family: Lymantriidae
