Painted Frogfish

Antennarius pictus

Description:

Also known as Painted Anglerfish, frogfish feed on small fish, crustaceans and worms. Their colors usually vary to match their surroundings. Juveniles sometimes go through a black phase. This frogfish grows to a length of about 16cm.

Habitat:

Found singly on sheltered reefs with leaf litter on sandy bottoms with rich sponge growth, at depths of 3 to 50m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I spotted this frogfish at 57 feet during a day dive in one of my favorite dive sites hereabouts, Dayang Beach, Talikud Is., Samal. It was out in the open in this mostly sandy and rubble area.
