Four-horned gumtree gall

Apiomorpha munita

Description:

Pic 1 shows a female gall with four winged horns. The gall was semi dry and still had a thin waxy coating. On a neighbouring branch were clusters of similar galls (Pics 2 & 3). Pic 3 shows a female gall with small short tubular male galls on it. The male galls have apical holes thorugh which the adult insect would have emerged.

Habitat:

Spotted on a eucalyptus tree (pic 4) near a lake in a reserve.

Notes:

These galls were formed by a gall forming scale insect Apiomorpha of the Eriococcidae family. http://www.lyncook.org/Lyn_Cook/Apiomorp...
