European hop-hornbeam

Ostrya carpinifolia

Description:

This Hop-hornbeam tree belongs to the Betulaceae, and the only species of the genus Ostrya that is native to Europe. This is a broad leaved tree growing tall, up to 20 to 25 m high. It produces a birch like double toothed leaves, and fruits (nuts) in pendulous clusters (featured here).

Habitat:

Native to Balkan and parts of Mediterranean Region, this tree is widespread in Europe. Here grows in broad leaved forest in National Park Krka, Croatia.

Notes:

This tree has a very hard, stable and heavy wood; that was used in construction of resistant tools, benches and wagons.
