Western Reef Heron

Egretta gularis

Description:

I really like this series, because every shot I've chosen here shows clearly the main characteristics necessary for its' identification: the general dark grey appearance, white chin and base of the neck, and bright yellow feet. The Western reef heron (or egret) is a medium sized heron, about 60cm in length. It appears in two morphs, white and dark grey; white morph could easily be confused with Little egret.

Habitat:

Seen in coastal areas of Sierra Leone, on a stream near a sandy beach, at the feet of hills covered in rainforest.
